((Characters: Kitten Alonzo, Kitten Munkustrap
Set waaaay back in time, when Munkustrap is still new to the junkyard, and Alonzo's still a kitten.))
Munkustrap circled the junkyard again, slinking along with his ears back and tail low. Tugger had promised him that he'd be safe here, and it certainly didn't seem like any of the Jellicles were ready to turn on him and tear him to pieces for being a Monnik... but you never could tell. Sometimes, cats were just really, really good at hiding their true intentions. He grew up with Macavity - he knew how well cats could lie and charm.
Tugger wasn't here yet. Usually, Tugger showed up in the junkyard first thing in the morning and left late at night, and so Munkustrap wasn't alone... but today, Tugger hadn't shown up. Munkustrap knew he had humans... were they keeping him prisoner?
Shying away from some of the older Jellicles, Munkustrap retreated to a beat-up old car with a license plate saying "TSE 1." Instead of lying on top, like he had seen cats do before, he crept underneath it, feeling safer with the car overhead and a wheel on either side of him. No cat could sneak up on him while he was under here.
Alonzo's eyes gleamed, tail twitching as he watched the mouse from behind the pipe. It was a rather small mouse, and unaware of Alonzo's prescence. The black-and-white tom, although young, was already of a fairly muscular build and good size, and he was sure he'd be able to easily catch himself a meal.
He pounced and the mouse darted smoothly away from his paws. Scowling, he chased after it as it ran in the direction of the small clearing the Jellicles used for dances. He had underestimated the speed of the mouse, and soon it had lost him. Sniffing, he caught the sent and followed it quietly - aha! He saw the tail slip beneath the back end of the TSE 1. Normally, he liked to lie out in the sun on it, but today he wanted that mouse - he dove underneath and found himself nearly crashing into a mass of fur.
Munkustrap had caught the mouse that dove beneath the car and practically straight into his paws without any problem, but he lost it as a much larger bundle of fur crashed into him. He leapt back with a yowl and a hiss, his fur standing on end, claws out - someone was attacking him!
Someone... small.
Alonzo scrambled up, his eyes re-focusing as they adjusted easily to the dim light. His ears flattened instinctually at the sound of the hiss. This cat looked familiar, though....but he couldn't quite place him..."Hey! I know you, don't I?" Alonzo said in a friendly tone, stepping forward. "You're Tugger's new friend...um...um...Straps, right? I'm Alonzo!"
... a kitten. Munkustrap was being attacked by a kitten. "Attacked." He stopped hissing, taking a step back when Alonzo took a step forward. "Munkustrap," he said, eyeing Alonzo warily. "Why'd you run into me?"
"I was hunting!" Alonzo grinned proudly. "I almost had a mouse...have you seen it? It came under here..." His stomach rumbled. "I'm kinda hungry."
"Oh..." That would explain why the mouse had run into his paws. "I had it until you showed up." Munkustrap frowned slightly at the kitten. Had he ever been that... cheerfully idiotic? Jellicle kittens seemed so much more stupid than Monnik kittens. Most Monnik kittens were being treated as adults from about the time they were a year and a half old... but Jellicle kittens needed a full two years to mature. Munkustrap didn't think that was very smart.
"Oh," Alonzo replied, dissapointed. "You had it?" Munkustrap had managed to catch the mouse in two seconds that Alonzo had been chasing for at least five minutes. "Hey...why were you under here? It's so gloomy, you should be out in the sun with everybody else!"
Munkustrap stared at Alonzo. If this kitten didn't understand the basics of shelter and cover, Munkustrap wasn't going to be the one to teach him...
Or, well, actually... if Munkustrap wanted to be accepted by the Jellicles, he really should be nice to them. Tugger had said they wouldn't hurt him, and someone had to teach the kittens what they needed to know to survive. "It's safe under here," he explained. "You can't be snuck up on. The only way you could get attacked is from the front, which you can keep an eye on."
"Well, you didn't see me, did you?" Alonzo said blatantly. "It's much safer out there, with the Guardians and everyone else. Not that we need to worry about that much, the 'yard is usually pretty peaceful...." Alonzo grinned. "That's what's great about living here! You can run around all day...thanks to the Protector and the Guardians...which is why, when I grow up, I want to be one of them."
"I did see you," Munkustrap retorted, crossing his arms. "You were just coming too fast." He shook his head. "An open yard can't be safer than an enclosed space. Anyone could come up behind you, or from the side, or jump down on you..." He frowned at the mention of the Guardians - he knew the Protector, Tugger had introduced them (and Munkustrap had tried not to be too scared of the imposing tom), but he wasn't sure who the Guardians were.
