Munkustrap is the protector of the Jellicle tribe, a large silver tabby with green-gold eyes. He is a handful of years out of kittenhood (none of the Jellicles really know, and he's not telling anyone), and therefore considered a full adult in the tribe.
Munkustrap joined the tribe as an adolescent. Most of the cats believe that he was one of Deuteronomy’s sons, sent back to the tribe from a wife who had moved away. For some reason, though, a few of the older cats believe he had shown up after some cruel humans had drowned his entire litter – he was the only one to escape with his life. In any event, Munkustrap does not talk about his past, and most of the other cats aren’t willing to admit they don’t know.
Wherever he was from, Munkustrap gained the trust and love of Deuteronomy and the tribe early on. He was far more serious than the other toms his age, and while he would tumble and wrestle with them, he was always the first to back away if their games became too dangerous, trying to divert their attention to something safer. Munkustrap also had shown a knack for fighting, and, upon joining the ranks of cats who guarded the yard from danger, proved his complete loyalty to the Jellicles time and again.
A year and a half ago, Munkustrap was chosen to become the Jellicle Protector, Deuteronomy’s second-in-command, after his predecessor was taken and killed by Macavity. Munkustrap had led a group to try and rescue the older cat, but they had been too late to save his life.
Munkustrap takes his role very seriously. He does his best to be fair to all members of the tribe, even when they drive him crazy (the kittens are especially guilty of this. He loves children, but the way they squeal whenever Tugger comes near… ear-splitting!). Munkustrap would sooner die than let any of his tribe be harmed. If danger is near, he will always put himself in between it and anyone else.
An upturned trunk serves as Munkustrap’s home in the junkyard, with a few old cushions tucked underneath for comfort. He doesn’t usually spend much time there, though, preferring instead to be patrolling the yard, standing watch on whatever pile of trash is highest, or napping on the broken cars (he likes the heat from the sun that radiates from the metal hoods – it’s especially nice when he’s feeling a bit achy from recent battles). During the day, there is at least one human who oversees the yard. This is when Munkustrap gets most of his sleep, letting the human keep the nastier things out. The human, though, is fond of Munkustrap, calling him “Tiger.” Munkustrap occasionally lets the human stroke his back.
One time, about a year ago, the human overseer had been concerned because other humans were rounding up stray cats and taking them to the pound. He didn’t want Munkustrap to be taken (though Munkustrap doubted any human could catch him in this junkyard), so he brought Munkustrap a studded black leather collar. Touched by the human’s compassion for him, Munkustrap accepted the collar, and still wears it today.
Munkustrap fears many things. Some, like failing the tribe and letting a member get hurt or killed, are well known to all the Jellicles. Others, like magic, he keeps to himself. Having a cat like Mistoffelees in the tribe makes things awkward for Munkustrap. While he likes the cat and gets along fine with Quaxo, the magic itself always puts him a bit on edge. His nemesis, Macavity, is a magical cat, which explains a lot about Munkustrap’s fear.
While Munkustrap cares about the entire tribe (some more obviously than others, like the skittish Demeter or the young kittens), he never really gets close to any of them. He has never officially claimed a mate. Though he has tumbled with a few cats, he doesn’t seem interested in forming lasting romantic relationships. Unlike the Tugger, though, he does his best not to break hearts.
