Munkustrap checked in on all the dens before going to his own, making sure no cat was in danger of freezing as they slept. He stopped by Quaxo's last, touching noses with his mother and kissing Quaxo good-day, finally retiring to his own trunk. He laid down in the corner and smiled to himself. It had been a good night.
Bombalurina didn't feel like sleeping in her den. It was too empty. She had gotten use to Demeter again, but now her friend was warm with her own humans. Bomba decided to check it on Munky. She stuck her head in his den. "Munkustrap? Could I... stay here, tonight?"
Munkustrap looked up and smiled at the red queen. "Of course, Bomba. You're always welcome here." He would appreciate the extra body as well, helping warm his den.
"Thanks Munkustrap," Bomba said, slipping into the den and settling down next to the tom. "It's so cold this winter! I hope we don't lose anybody like... last winter."
"Or the one before that," Munkustrap said, rolling onto his side and wrapping his arms around Bomba in a loose embrace. "Hopefully, this cold isn't foretelling what the rest of the winter's going to be like."
"Oh Everlasting Cat, no!" Bomba said, yawning. "You know, there hasn't been much of a food shortage. Maybe this is just a small cold snap. It'll pass."
Munkustrap nodded, stroking his paw down Bomba's back. "Tugger's sworn to do his best to get out sooner, if the snow piles up again like it did, and I'm on friendlier terms with the human here. He might be able to help us, if things get that dire."
"Good. I'm glad there are humans to help us." Bomba paused. "Um, Munkustrap, I was thinking. What would we name the kittens? I mean, they need names. Do you have any ideas?"
"Do we even know how many there are?" Munkustrap asked, sliding his paw around to rest it lightly over Bomba's stomach. "Or if they're queens or toms?"
"Jelly guessed about four. She couldn't tell the gender, but she guessed two girls and two boys. But, I mean, we should get some ideas," she said. "I like Ariadne for a girl. It sounds pretty."
"Hmm..." Munkustrap stroked Bomba's fur, thinking. "Well, the kittens wanted to name one Tugger," he said with a smile. "But I think that'll go to his head - the real Tugger's."
"I bet they did," Bombalurina laughed. "No, we can't name one Tugger. Or Mistokitty. I might have to kill myself," she joked. "But honestly, do you have any ideas for names?"
"What about Apollinax, for a tom?" Munkustrap suggested quietly, thinking back to his second-oldest brother. After Macavity, Apollinax had been his favorite sibling.
"That sounds like a nice name," Bombalurina agreed. "And Ariadne for a queen. Two down, two to go."
Munkustrap reached up to touch Bomba's cheek. "Grizabella?" he offered. "As a tribute to the Glamour Cat?"
"How about just Bella?" Bomba said. "Grizabella sounds too sad."
"Bella," Munkustrap agreed. "And what about the second tom?"
"How about Munky?" Bomba said, laughing.
"Everlasting Cat, no," Munkustrap groaned, closing his eyes.
"What? You don't like Munky?" Bomba asked. She knew perfectly well the name annoyed him, but still...
"Have I ever given any indication that I did?" he asked, looking over at her with a smile.
"No, but maybe you're just a good actor." Bombalurina winked.
"I'll leaving the acting to Gus, and settle for no Munky," Munkustrap said, leaning his head down to touch their noses together.
"Then what do you think he should be called?" Bomba asked. She loved how close he was to her.
"Bomby," Munkustrap answered with a grin.
"For a tom? No way, Munkustrap. Try again." She wrapped her tail around his and smiled.
Munkustrap traced idle patterns on Bomba's back as he thought. "Ruusu?"
Bomba considered the name. "That sounds okay. Ariadne, Apollinax, Bella, and Ruusu," she listed the names. "They sound nice."
"Four kittens," Munkustrap murmured. "You're expecting them in the spring?"
Bombalurina nodded. "Probably early to mid spring. And Jelly just guessed-- there could be three or five. But probably four."
"That's good," Munkustrap said. "It would be dangerous if they were born in the winter."
"They wouldn't be healthy. Early birth means tiny, less-developed kittens that would probably die." Bombalurina laughed. "I've been hanging around Jellylorum too much."
"I'm sure they'll be fine," Munkustrap said. "With you for a mother, how could they not be?"
Bombalurina snorted. "Please. Me? A good mother?"
"You're strong, bold... caring." Munkustrap kissed her forehead. "I think you'll be an amazing mother."
"Thank you Munkustrap," Bomba whispered. "I've been so worried and scared. I don't know the first thing about being a mom!"
"I don't think there's any cat who does before their first litter," Munkustrap said, hugging her close. "I don't know the first thing about being a dad, but I'll do my best."
"You'll be fine. You're the Jellicle Protector. You already know how to play with kittens and nurture and... put up with with pregnant hormone-raged queens."
Munkustrap laughed. "And you know how to play with kittens and nurture too... and you don't have to put up with the pregnant, hormone-raged queen, you just have to be one." He nuzzled her cheek. "You're amazing with Etcetera, Electra, and Jemima. They all love you... and don't even get me started on Pounce."
Bombalurina laughed. "Ah Pouncival. He's a sweetie." She smiled and leaned into him. "Not as sweet as you though."
"He's almost as bad around you as Etcy is around Tugger, only he doesn't get all squeally." Munkustrap smiled and draped his tail over her leg. "You're popular."
"I don't think ANYONE can be as bad as Etcy around Tugger," Bomba laughed. She ran her fingers through the fur on his chest.
"What about Tugger around Tugger?" Munkustrap suggested, nuzzling her ear. "When he gets all full of himself..."
"Hmm... maybe. I think it's a close tie." Bomba smiled. "You know, the way you keep nuzzling me, someone might think you were interested."
Munkustrap paused before pulling a paw away from Bomba's back. He tilted her face up toward him and smiled faintly. "I am interested," he murmured. "You're amazing, Bomba."
To say the least, Bomba was surprised. She thought he was just being kind to her. "I... I think you're amazing, too, Munkustrap," she managed to say. It wasn't a lie at all; she truly was taken with the silver tabby.
Munkustrap smiled sadly and leaned down to brush a kiss over her lips. "I'm sorry," he whispered.
"For what?" she whispered back, kissing him again. She did looovvveee kissing him.
"Loving Quaxo too," he answered. "And Demeter. For not being able to choose between the three of you... and therefore not being fair to any of you."
There wasn't anything Bombalurina could say. It truly wasn't fair for Munkustrap to lead three different cats on. But yet, Bombalurina didn't feel mad or used. "Munkustrap, you know you'll need to choose one of us. And soon. But, until then..." she kissed the tom again, this time holding it.
"I know. I don't want to, but I know I'll have to." But until then... Munkustrap smiled as he returned Bomba's kiss, running his paw through the fur on the back of her head.
Bombalurina pulled back. "You're not just doing this because I'm carrying your kittens, right?" she asked.
"Were you carrying my kittens when we started doing this?" Munkustrap asked. "No, Bomba, I'm not just doing this because you might be carrying my kittens."
"Promise?" Bomba asked, wanting to make sure.
"I promise," Munkustrap asked. He kissed Bomba's forehead. "If I didn't love you, Bomba, it wouldn't be so hard to choose."
"Then where do we go from here?" Bombalurina dragged her finger down his chest and down his stomach, then stopped.
"Wherever you want," Munkustrap murmured, kissing Bomba again. "Wherever you desire."
