"My...?" That was the second time Quaxo had begun to refer to Macavity as something else. "If you don't see him as a threat, then why do you fear him?" He lifted his arms to loosely hug Quaxo as he spoke. While he really should be outside, patrolling the yard, he was also hoping to help Quaxo feel better, especially after that 'I haven't been okay for a while' comment he had made earlier.

Quaxo shook his head slowly at Munkustrap's first inquiry. "My nothing." he murmured, then turned his gaze up to the older cat's face.
"I, er, I don't know." he said honestly. Really, Quaxo could beat Macavity in a battle if he had to do it, but he didn't want to hurt him. Macavity had done some things for Quaxo that no one else had. "I guess I just don't want to... hurt him, which is why I stay away from the fights."

Munkustrap blinked, staring down at Quaxo with unhidden surprise written on his face. He had never met another cat who didn't want to hurt Macavity. Even Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer didn't seem too fond of him, and they worked for him (sometimes). "You... don't want to hurt him?"

"No, I don't." Quaxo replied, looking up to Munkustrap and shaking his head slowly. He saw the surprise on his friend's face and reached one hand up, gently stroking Munkustrap's cheek.
Quaxo averted his gaze suddenly, sighing. "He's done some pretty awful things to people, but I'm... sure he's a nice cat once you get to know him."

"He is not a nice cat once you get to know him," Munkustrap said with a glare (directed at Macavity, who wasn't there). "He is a worse cat once you get to know him." Munkustrap only had a little grudge against Macavity. Just a little one.
Okay, maybe a big one.
Munkustrap didn't think Macavity could ever earn his respect.

"Yes he is, Munky."
Quaxo's eyes widened as he realized just what he'd said, having revealed not his secret, but that he did have contact with Macavity. "Er..."
Quaxo started to pull away, hoping Munkustrap wasn't bright enough to catch that, though he knew he was.

Munkustrap turned his glare on Quaxo now, but it wasn't nearly as intense as it had been when he was thinking about Macavity. "You think you know him well enough to say that?" He tightened his arms slightly, not letting the smaller cat escape so easily.

Quaxo slowly closed his eyes, mentally cursing himself for even mentioning it. As he turned back to Munkustrap, he nodded slowly, feeling warm, frightened tears fill his eyes.
"I know that I know him well enough, Munky." the younger cat whispered, nestling his face into his friend's chest again.

Munkustrap looked down at Quaxo, at the younger cat's dejected posture, and took a deep breath, trying to ease the tension from his body. Talking about Macavity always put him on edge like this, but directing his anger at Quaxo wasn't helping either of them. "How do you know him?" he asked once he was calmer. Slowly, he ran his paw from Quaxo's ears down his back, over and over again, trying to soothe his younger friend.

Quaxo lifted his head and opened his eyes, staring into Munkustrap's eyes. "Do you promise you won't tell anyone? Especially Deuteronomy..." he whispered, his ears falling flat against his head in a mixture of fear and sorrow.
"Macavity is my... well... he's my fa-... my father." Quaxo closed his eyes, preparing to be shoved away from Munkustrap and shunned by his older friend for a while.

"I promise," Munkustrap answered Quaxo. Still, agreeing to a promise wasn't enough to prepare Munkustrap for what Quaxo said next.
His paw stilled on Quaxo's back for a moment as Munkustrap stared at the smaller cat in surprise for the second time that night. "Your... father?" Macavity had a child? He had a...? Munkustrap refused to even finish. He had cut all his familial ties with Macavity long ago.
Still, it would explain where Quaxo got his magic from.

The younger tom nodded slowly and bit his lip softly, hoping his friend wasn't angry with him. It wasn't his fault his father was the one cat everyone in this tribe hated.
"I was his only child. I was the only kitten in my mother's litter, and I got Macavity's magic strongly. He was in a litter of a lot more than me, so I always had the advantage over him when we messed around with our magic." Quaxo sighed quietly, glancing to his right. He missed his father; he really was a good father.
"He was good to me."

Munkustrap began running his paw down Quaxo's back again, though he had tensed involuntarily when Quaxo mentioned Macavity's litter. A litter of six of us, two sisters, four brothers. Macavity was the oldest, always the first to do everything, the first to explore, the first to get in a fight, the first to discover we had magic... "Why did you leave his tribe, then?" he asked quietly.

"H-he killed my mother." Quaxo whispered, burying his face in his friend's chest. He felt the older cat tense when he mentioned Macavity's litter and looked up, tilting his head to the side.
"Munk? You seem anxious... when I talk about his siblings." he murmured, reaching up to stroke Munkustrap's cheek softly. "Is anything wrong?"

Munkustrap looked down at Quaxo. The little cat had trusted him with his secret... but Munkustrap wasn't ready to trust anyone else with his own. Not even Deuteronomy knew of his past... and Munkustrap wasn't even sure if Macavity himself knew everything between them. Instead, Munkustrap settled on a partial truth. "I used to be a member of Macavity's tribe," he told Quaxo quietly, taking one of the black cat's paws in his. "Until he and his brother killed my siblings... and almost me as well." He brought Quaxo's paw up to his throat where a large scar was, hidden by his thick fur.
